Brass is used for its appearance similar to gold. It is used for piercing to give a "tribal" look. Brass piercings are used by tribes around the world. We use a copper alloy, from copper, zinc and silver in which there is no nickel.
Brass jewelry should not be used as a jewel of first pose, these can cause irritation for some people.
First, brass jewelry does not look the same as gold, silver or pink gold plated. In a brass jewel, we look for the vintage brown look.
Brass can leave a green task where the jewelry was worn, this is the result of a reaction between a metal in the jewelry and your skin or a hand lotion for example. When the acids of your sweaty skin (or your lotion) causes corrosion of the copper in the jewel, this creates copper salts. The copper salts are blue-green and leave a task on your skin.
Other metals can have the same effect: silver, for example, oxidizes in contact with air. This can cause tarnishing and leave you with a dark green or black task. These tasks are often associated with "low-end" jewelery, but this can also happen with "high-end" jewelery.
Surgical steel and white gold do not oxidize.
The good news is that even very tarnished brass can be cleaned. Simply by leaving your jewel for 30 minutes in ketchup and water. It will come out like new. Removing your jewelry before washing with soap will reduce the chances that they will go green.
