Brass is used for its appearance similar to gold. It is used for piercing to give a "tribal" look. Brass piercings are used by tribes around the world. We use a copper alloy, from copper, zinc and silver in which there is no nickel.
Brass jewels should not be used as a jewel of first pose, they can cause irritation for some people.
First, brass jewelry does not look the same as gold, silver or rose gold plated. In a brass jewel, we are looking for the vintage brown look.
Brass can leave a green spot where the jewel has been worn, this is the result of a reaction between a metal in the jewel and your skin or a hand lotion for example. When the acids in your sweaty skin (or lotion) causes corrosion of the copper in the jewel, it creates copper salts. Copper salts are blue-green and leave a stain on your skin.
Other metals can have the same effect: silver for example oxidizes in contact with the air. This can cause tarnishing and leave you with a dark green or black spot. These tasks are often associated with "low-end" jewelry, but it can also happen with "high-end" jewelry.
Surgical steel and white gold do not oxidize.
The good news is that even very tarnished brass can be cleaned. Simply leave your jewel for 30 minutes in ketchup and water. It will come out like new. Removing jewelry before washing with soap will reduce the chance that they will turn green.
